From a small beginning in 1853, Indian Railways today is the largest Government Organization employing more than 14 lakh staff in various categories in Group ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ & ‘D’. The recruitment for Group ‘A’ is done through Union Public Service Commission, Group ‘B’ through promotions from Group ‘C’ ( done by respective Railways) and Group ‘C’ staff is recruited by Railway Recruitment Boards. In 2005, Railway Board have instructed that recruitment to Group ‘D’ in the Railways will henceforth be done by the respective Zonal Railways through a Recruitment Cell created in the Headquarters Office.
